Compulsory education

The obligation to provide an education for every child aged three to sixteen living in France, regardless of nationality. This normally takes place at a school; home education requires authorisation.

A requirement for all children

Education is compulsory from the ages of three to sixteen for children living in France. It aims, among other things, to help them acquire the knowledge and skills needed for their development and participation in society.

School and home education

Enrolment at a state or private school is the usual route. Home education is not an entirely free choice: it requires authorisation on grounds specified by law and is subject to checks.

After the age of sixteen

Young people aged sixteen to eighteen are required to remain in education or training. This requirement can be met, among other ways, through continued study, an apprenticeship, employment or a tailored support programme.
