CM1

First year of the intermediate course: a primary school class after CE2 and before CM2. It is part of Cycle 3, the consolidation cycle, which continues through the first year of secondary school.

After CE2

The first year of the intermediate course is an elementary school year that comes after CE2 and before CM2. It marks the start of the consolidation cycle, known as cycle 3.

Building on what pupils have learned

Pupils strengthen their command of French and mathematics while developing their knowledge in subjects such as history, geography and science. They learn to produce more structured answers and to work more independently.

A cycle that continues into lower secondary school

Cycle 3 includes CM1, CM2 and the first year of lower secondary school. It therefore links the end of elementary school with the beginning of lower secondary school. CE2 is still part of cycle 2: moving up to CM1 means moving into a new cycle, even though the pupil remains in elementary school.
