EMC

Moral and civic education: a school subject that teaches the values and principles of the Republic, rights and duties, and develops critical judgment and a sense of citizenship.

Understanding citizenship

Moral and civic education teaches the values and principles of the Republic. It covers rights and duties, freedom, equality, secularism and respect for others, among other topics.

Developing judgement

Students learn to make reasoned arguments, listen and distinguish opinions from facts. Studying texts, situations or documents provides opportunities to explore freedom of expression and its legal limits. Respect for people does not rule out critical discussion of ideas.

Key points for the exam

The Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen is a fundamental text for understanding rights. The Charter of Rights and Duties sets out civic principles in the context of acquiring nationality. Defence and Citizenship Day falls within a different framework: these initiatives contribute to citizenship education but are distinct from moral and civic education in schools.
