JDC

Defence and Citizenship Day: a mandatory day for young French citizens, organised after citizen registration, which provides information notably on national defence and citizens’ responsibilities.

A step in the citizenship journey

Defence and Citizenship Day is for young French citizens and forms part of a process that includes civic registration. It helps inform them about national defence and citizens’ responsibilities.

Registration and participation

Civic registration is a preliminary procedure, separate from participation in the day. Supporting documents relating to these obligations may be required when registering for certain examinations or competitive examinations, depending on age and the applicable rules. Those concerned must check their status with the relevant authorities.

Key points to remember

Citizenship involves rights, but also duties. Defence and Citizenship Day (JDC) does not constitute voluntary enlistment in the armed forces. Moral and civic education (EMC) at school and the Charter of Rights and Duties of French Citizens also address this civic dimension, in different contexts.
