Life and Earth Sciences (SVT)

Life and Earth Sciences: a school subject that studies living organisms, the human body, the Earth and the environment. Religious beliefs cannot be used to opt out of this compulsory subject.

A scientific discipline

Life and Earth sciences study living organisms, how the human body works, the planet and the environment. This subject helps students understand topics such as biodiversity, health and geological phenomena.

Learning to reason

Students observe, formulate hypotheses and test their ideas against results. The scientific method is based on knowledge and evidence, not on adherence to a belief.

Life and Earth sciences and secular schools

Religious convictions do not entitle students to refuse compulsory instruction. Schools respect freedom of conscience while ensuring that the curriculum is taught. Life and Earth sciences and moral and civic education are two different subjects, each of which contributes to developing judgement.
