Préfecture
The State administration in each département, responsible among other things for residence permits and for processing naturalisation applications.
The préfecture checks the naturalisation file, invites the applicant to the assimilation interview and writes an opinion. For residence permits, it issues or renews the card and hands out a récépissé while the case is pending.
In some places a sous-préfecture or a regional platform handles these procedures instead of the département’s préfecture.
