Naturalisation by decree

The procedure by which the State grants French nationality to a foreign national who applies for it; it is a favour, not a right.

Applicants must normally have lived in France for at least five years and show that they are assimilated into the French community, speak French well enough and are of good conduct. The file is submitted online, examined by the préfecture and then reviewed nationally.

If approved, a naturalisation decree is published in the Journal officiel. The administration may refuse or postpone an application even when every condition is met.
