Direct universal suffrage

A voting system in which citizens who have the right to vote elect their representatives directly. In France, it is used notably for presidential and legislative elections.

Voting directly for your representatives

Suffrage is universal when the right to vote is granted to all citizens who meet the legal requirements, regardless of wealth. It is direct when voters themselves choose the officeholder, without going through an intermediate electoral college.

Examples in France

The President of the Republic and members of the National Assembly are elected by direct universal suffrage. To vote in national elections, you must, among other requirements, be a French citizen, be of legal age, enjoy your civic rights and be registered on the electoral roll.

Not to be confused with: indirect suffrage, used to elect senators.
