Democracy

A political system in which power belongs to the people, who exercise it directly or through elected representatives. Democracy requires, among other things, free elections, pluralism and respect for fundamental rights.

The power of the people

The Constitution enshrines the principle of “government of the people, by the people and for the people”. In France, national sovereignty belongs to the people, who exercise it through their representatives and by means of referendums.

Beyond voting

Democracy is not limited to holding elections. It also involves freedom of expression, the possibility of political opposition, pluralism and the protection of fundamental rights.

Do not confuse

Majority decisions must respect the Constitution and everyone's rights. The rule of law thus provides a framework for the exercise of democratic power.
