National Assembly

The chamber of the French Parliament made up of deputies elected by direct universal suffrage. It passes laws, scrutinises the Government and can hold it to account through a motion of no confidence.

The chamber of deputies

The National Assembly is one of the two chambers of Parliament. It comprises 577 deputies elected by direct universal suffrage for five years, unless their term is cut short by a dissolution.

A legislative and political role

Deputies examine and vote on laws, scrutinise the Government and evaluate public policies. The Assembly can bring down the Government by adopting a motion of no confidence under the conditions laid down in the Constitution.

Key point: the National Assembly can be dissolved by the President of the Republic, unlike the Senate.
