An institution of the executive branch

The Government determines and conducts the nation's policy. It has the civil service and the armed forces at its disposal. The Prime Minister directs its work.

The relationship with Parliament

The Government introduces bills and implements laws that have been passed. Parliament passes laws and scrutinises the Government's work. The National Assembly can hold the Government to account, notably through a motion of no confidence.

Not to be confused with

The President of the Republic is not part of the Government, even though the President chairs the Council of Ministers. Nor should the Government be confused with the civil service as a whole.
