Social security
A set of schemes and organizations that protect people against social risks and provide support in certain life situations, including illness, maternity, workplace accidents, old age and family expenses. It is funded in particular through contributions and earmarked taxes.
Protection against life's risks
The French Social Security system provides collective protection against situations such as illness, maternity, workplace accidents, old age and family expenses. The general scheme was established in 1945.
Organizations and funding
Various organizations provide this protection: the CPAM (local health insurance funds) are involved primarily in administering the national health insurance scheme, and the CAF (family allowance funds) administer family benefits. Funding comes from social security contributions and earmarked taxes, notably the CSG (general social contribution).
Note the distinction: the national health insurance scheme is part of the Social Security system; supplementary health insurance supplements basic coverage.
