CNR — National Council of the Resistance

An organisation bringing together resistance movements, political parties and trade unions to coordinate the French internal Resistance. First convened under the chairmanship of Jean Moulin in 1943, the CNR adopted a programme of reforms for the Liberation in 1944.

Uniting the domestic Resistance

The National Council of the Resistance brings together resistance movements, political parties and trade unions. Its first meeting takes place in 1943, chaired by Jean Moulin, who was tasked by Charles de Gaulle with helping to achieve this unification.

Preparing for the Liberation

The CNR coordinates the struggle and adopts a programme of post-war reforms in 1944. This programme combines the restoration of democratic freedoms with ambitions for social transformation.

Key point: the CNR is a Resistance organisation, not a parliamentary assembly of the Fifth Republic.
