Supplementary health insurance

An organisation or supplementary health insurance policy that reimburses all or part of the costs remaining payable by the insured person after reimbursement by National Health Insurance, depending on the coverage provided. In everyday usage, the word “mutuelle” can refer to supplementary health insurance even when it is offered by another type of insurer.

Supplementing reimbursements

Depending on its coverage, supplementary health insurance reimburses expenses that remain payable by the insured person after reimbursement by the French national health insurance system. It may cover, for example, medical consultations, dental care or optical products.

Understanding the word “mutuelle”

In everyday language, this word often refers to any supplementary health insurance. Legally, a mutuelle is a type of mutual insurance organisation: other insurers can also offer supplementary coverage.

Key point: supplementary health insurance does not replace the French national health insurance system and does not automatically reimburse all costs. You need to check the coverage and limits of the policy.
