Carte Vitale

A personal card issued by France’s national health insurance system containing the administrative information needed for healthcare coverage. It facilitates the submission of healthcare claim forms and reimbursements, but is neither a payment card nor a guarantee that all healthcare is free.

What is it used for?

The Vitale card contains the administrative information needed for healthcare costs to be covered by the French national health insurance system (Assurance Maladie). When presented to a healthcare professional with the appropriate equipment, it facilitates the electronic submission of the treatment claim form and reimbursement.

What it does not guarantee

It is not a payment card. Presenting it does not mean that all costs will be reimbursed or that no upfront payment will be required: this depends on the care provided, your entitlements and the coverage rules.

Important distinction: the Vitale card relates to Assurance Maladie; supplementary health insurance coverage depends on a separate policy.
