Social security contributions

Levies that help fund social protection, including healthcare, pensions and certain benefits. For employees, a distinction is made between employee and employer contributions.

Funding social protection

Social security contributions fund various social protection schemes. They apply in particular to employees, employers and self-employed workers, under rules specific to each situation.

On the payslip

Employee contributions are deducted from gross pay. Employer contributions are payable by the employer in addition to this pay. They help fund social entitlements under the rules of each scheme.

Not to be confused

Social security contributions are not the only source of funding for social protection. Taxes and levies, such as the general social contribution (CSG), also help fund it. Net pay also depends on other factors, including income tax withheld at source.
