Employment tribunal

A court that settles individual disputes between employees and employers arising from a private-law employment contract. It is made up of tribunal members representing employees and employers and generally seeks conciliation before ruling on the case.

The court for individual employment disputes

The employment tribunal settles disputes between an employee and their employer concerning a private-law employment contract. A dispute may concern, in particular, unpaid wages, dismissal or the performance of the contract.

A court with equal representation

The tribunal members represent employees and employers. They are appointed on the recommendation of trade unions and employers’ organisations. The proceedings generally include an attempt at conciliation before a judgment is delivered.

Key point: the employment tribunal is part of the judicial court system. It does not deal indiscriminately with all disputes arising from professional activity.
