PDO

Protected designation of origin: a European label that guarantees a product is made in a defined geographical area using recognised expertise, and that its characteristics are linked to that area.

Protecting origin and know-how

A protected designation of origin is a European mark that identifies a product whose characteristics are linked to a geographical area and recognised know-how. It protects a name and regulates its use.

A product specification

The products concerned must comply with a specification covering, among other things, the geographical area and production conditions. The required stages must take place within the defined area in accordance with the rules of the designation. Checks are carried out to verify compliance with these requirements.

What the label does not mean

A PDO is not the same as an organic label or a simple commercial statement of origin. It does not, on its own, guarantee any particular nutritional value. This scheme illustrates the European Union’s role in protecting names and promoting products from specific geographical areas.
