EU

European Union: a union of 27 European states based on treaties and equipped with common institutions. It organizes their political and economic cooperation, particularly within the framework of the single market.

A union founded on treaties

The European Union (EU) currently brings together 27 European states that have entrusted certain powers to common institutions. France is one of the 6 founding countries of European integration, shaped notably by the Treaty of Rome (1957) and the Treaty of Maastricht (1992). The powers of the Union are defined by these treaties.

How does it work?

The European Parliament (whose official seat is in Strasbourg) represents the citizens, the Council of the European Union represents the governments of the member states, and the European Commission notably proposes legislative texts. The European Council sets the broad political priorities. These institutions have complementary yet distinct functions.

Effects on everyday life

The single market promotes the free movement of people, goods, services, and capital in accordance with applicable rules. PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) labels and the common VAT framework also illustrate European action in everyday life. The EU should not be confused with the eurozone, the Schengen area, or the Council of Europe.
