Administrative appeal

A request for the administration to reconsider a decision, addressed either to the authority that made it or to its superior, as applicable. Some procedures require an administrative appeal before a case can be brought before a judge; the available appeal routes and time limits must be checked in the notification of the decision.

Requesting a review of a decision

An administrative appeal involves asking the administration to reconsider a decision. An appeal for reconsideration is addressed to the authority that made the decision; an appeal to a higher authority is addressed to the competent superior authority.

Before any legal action

Some procedures require a mandatory prior administrative appeal before taking the case to court. To challenge an adverse decision on naturalisation by decree, you must follow the appeal procedures set out in the notification of that decision.

Key points: check the decision being challenged, the recipient, the supporting documents required and the deadlines. Do not assume that all administrative processes follow the same procedure.
