Civic exam

A written multiple-choice test on the principles, institutions and daily life of France, required since 2026 for naturalisation and some residence cards.

Introduced by the law of 26 January 2024, the exam covers the values of the Republic, the institutional system, rights and duties, history, geography and culture, and life in society.

It complements the assimilation interview rather than replacing it. The exact rules are set by ministerial order and may change: check your notice and the Ministry of the Interior website.
