Region

A territorial authority administered by a regional council and its president. Its responsibilities include economic development, regional transport, vocational training and the management of public upper secondary schools.

A tier of territorial organisation

A region is a local authority administered by a regional council and its president. It has responsibilities that differ from those of municipalities and departments.

Main responsibilities

Its responsibilities include economic development, regional public transport, vocational training and the management of public upper secondary schools.

Key point for the exam: municipalities are responsible in particular for primary schools, departments for lower secondary schools and regions for upper secondary schools. This division of responsibilities does not mean that these local authorities determine school curricula on their own.
