Producing official statistics

The National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies produces, analyses and disseminates data on France’s population, economy and society. Its publications help inform public debate with statistical information.

Population and territories

Insee notably publishes population data and the Official Geographic Code, which is used to identify municipalities and other administrative divisions.

Key point: statistical data must always be associated with a date, a territory and a definition. The number of municipalities or the population must not be presented as a fixed value.
