PACS — Civil solidarity pact

A contract entered into by two adults, of different sexes or the same sex, to organize their life together. It creates obligations including mutual material support and assistance.

Organizing life together

A civil solidarity pact is a contract registered at a town hall or with a notary. The partners commit to living together and providing each other with material support and assistance.

Conditions to meet

In particular, a PACS cannot be entered into between certain members of the same family, or by someone who is already married or already in a PACS.

Not to be confused with marriage

A PACS does not have all the legal effects of marriage. In particular, one partner does not automatically inherit from the other: a will is required to pass assets on to them, within the limits of inheritance law.
