OIF
International Organisation of La Francophonie: an organisation bringing together states and governments that share the French language, which promotes the French language, cultural diversity, cooperation and peace.
The French-speaking world as a space for cooperation
The International Organisation of La Francophonie brings together states and governments that share the French language. It supports the French language, cultural diversity, cooperation and peace.
Beyond language
Francophonie also refers to all the people and places where French is used. The OIF is an institutional organisation: it does not automatically represent every French speaker and is not a body responsible for all language-related procedures.
Complementary concepts
The DELF and DALF diplomas certify a level of proficiency in French, but are not issued by the OIF. UNESCO and the OIF are both concerned with cultural diversity, but have distinct missions and institutional frameworks. For the civic exam, it is useful to remember the international dimension of the French language.
