Civil marriage

A legally recognized union solemnized by a civil registrar under the conditions laid down in the Civil Code. In France, a religious ceremony alone does not have the legal effects of a civil marriage.

A union governed by law

A civil marriage is solemnized at the town hall by a civil registrar. It is based in particular on the free consent of the future spouses and gives rise to mutual rights and duties.

Who can get married?

It is open to opposite-sex and same-sex couples. The minimum age is eighteen, subject to an exceptional exemption provided for by law. It is not possible to enter into a new marriage before the previous one has been dissolved.

Civil marriage and religious ceremonies

A religious ceremony does not replace a civil marriage. In France, it must take place after the civil marriage.
