Freedom of expression

The freedom to communicate one's opinions and to receive or share information and ideas. It protects criticism and caricature in particular, subject to the limits set by law.

A fundamental freedom

Freedom of expression allows people to debate, criticise public authorities and share ideas. Freedom of the press is part of its exercise.

Criticism of religions and limits

Criticising a religion or depicting it in a caricature is generally permitted in France. French law does not provide for a general offence of blasphemy.

However, this freedom does not permit all speech: defamation, certain insults, threats or incitement to discrimination, hatred or violence may be punished under the conditions set by law.

Do not confuse

Criticising an idea or a belief is not the same as unlawfully attacking a person or a group.
