United Nations: an international organization responsible, among other things, for maintaining international peace and security, developing cooperation between states and promoting human rights. France is a permanent member of its Security Council.
An international organization
The United Nations promotes peace, international security, cooperation and the protection of human rights. It provides States with a framework for dialogue and collective action.
Bodies with different roles
The General Assembly brings together the Member States. The Security Council has a particular responsibility for peace and security. France is a permanent member of this Council and, under the conditions set out in the Charter, has the right to veto substantive decisions.
The United Nations system
The UN works with various bodies and specialized agencies. UNESCO is active in education, science and culture in particular. The UN is not a world government: its action is based on the Charter, the powers of its bodies and cooperation among States.
