Liberty, Equality, Fraternity

The motto of the French Republic, enshrined in the Constitution. It expresses the values of individual liberty, equal rights and solidarity between people.

The three values of the motto

  • Liberty: everyone enjoys fundamental freedoms, while respecting the rights of others and the limits set by law.
  • Equality: everyone enjoys equal rights and equality before the law; discrimination prohibited by law is forbidden.
  • Fraternity: it expresses an ideal of solidarity and is also a principle of constitutional standing.

In everyday life

Expressing an opinion, enjoying equal access to public services or helping someone in difficulty illustrate these values.

Key point

Equal rights do not mean that all situations are identical. Differences in treatment may be permitted when they are legally justified.
