Bastille Day

France’s national day, celebrated each year on 14 July. It commemorates the storming of the Bastille in 1789 and the Festival of the Federation in 1790, symbols of freedom and national unity.

Two historical milestones

  • 14 July 1789: the storming of the Bastille becomes an iconic event of the French Revolution.
  • 14 July 1790: the Festival of the Federation celebrates unity and reconciliation among the French people.

The national day

The law of 1880 establishes 14 July as the annual national day without specifying a year in its text. The celebration thus brings together these two historical references.

Today

14 July is a public holiday. Ceremonies, parades, dances and fireworks displays are organised for the occasion.
